"A tree that makes a T."
Using nature as our foundations for answering our 'Welcome to Tolworth' brief is a really exciting prospect which I am very very fond of. This is because visiting Tolworth told me instantly that it was missing just that, nature. Now, using nature to way find is a quite vague description and could mean many things, are we making signs to navigate the public to the nature? Are we using natural products to navigate? It has many meanings, but for us, it is a bit of both, we want to use aspects of nature to use as signage to navigate the public to even more places of natural beauty such as parks and the nature reserve in and throughout Tolworth as well as the places of heritage that we will be choosing to use on our route, if there is any...
Personally I really like this as (see my previous blogs) I am a big fan of biophilic design as it is really attractive to the eye as well as coming with many benefits physically and mentally such as tackling air pollution and studies suggest being in and around nature calms you and makes you happier, which is brilliant if we were to bring it to Tolworth which is dominated by a huge A Road.
But the problem of rounding this entire 'using nature to way find still remained'... Until I had an idea. In classic Ollie fashion I was drunk and about to fall asleep when I started thinking of the project and I came up with a little sketch of a tree that looked like a T. It felt like I struck gold because it was really the perfect way to use a symbol of nature to physically navigate the public to areas of interest.

Nothing like a scamp to start out a great idea... As you can see from the drawing the T fitted like a logo and the roots coming from the tree circled round all the places of interest that we have such as the parks, nature reserve, train station and the main Tolworth Broadway. Looking at this I feel as though it encompasses exactly what we are trying to do, navigate the public through Tolworth using nature as the main feature.
I am sure that we will be developing this idea further, maybe the T could be the logo? I also came up with a slogan while drawing this - 'Same routes, new ideas.' which actually sounds quite good and its a play on words with 'roots' and 'routes' and it touches on the fact that Tolworth doesn't seem at this point, to have many points of heritage and the ones we have found have been demolished and replaced by houses or businesses.
Another idea that I would quite like to see being developed is using this tree as maybe a sculpture that could go in the centre of Tolworth as a vocal point for the route and the entire project. A key feature of the sculpture would be that it had some sort of feature that allowed residents to put their memories on leaves so it would be a sort of mural for residents' memories and thoughts on Tolworth.
