“An application that solves the problem of pollution while bringing the

community together.”

When we first got the brief 'Welcome to Tolworth' I realised it had great scope for ideas as the answer to the 'problems' were so vast. Tolworth suffers from huge congestion issues which then creates more emissions from cars that are in traffic jams going through the middle of Tolworth. This accompanied by the overall international concern of climate change resulting in me really targeting on green spaces and how we can help Tolworth in escaping the traffic as well as its pollution.

The idea being in the very early stages I am sure there are somethings I haven't thought about, but the general concept of it is a website/application that the residents of Tolworth and in fact everyone else can use to:

  • Find the best 'greenest' route to their destination

  • Read pollution levels of roads and surrounding areas

  • Communicate with other registered residents through the community talk messenger

  • Get alerts and notifications on sales, discounts, events and many more important things that individuals would like to share with their community.

As you can see from the diagram above, the pollution levels are colour coded very simply so it is easy for you to understand which is important as people will feel more inclined to use the application if it's easy and makes sense. Each key point, for example the Football club, the registered administrator of the Club will able to send out notifications saying if they have 'free football training today' etc. This will be great for a community as it will get people involved in activities that they may not know about or have done before. The routing isn't done on speed, we want people to stay in Tolworth and enjoy what It has to offer so using the green root will take you to the best places with the cleanest air while getting you to your destination - In this diagram it is the 'Town Centre' from 'Home'. Using the Orange can be the 2nd best root regarding pollution but is the quickest, the the red is the worst polluted and worst regarding not seeing any places of interest.

On the left you have the community talk page where, when you sign in using many different social medias - Again to make it easier for the user, you can then chat to other registered users in a safe environment and speak about local events, sales or even problems if they wanted, whatever the residents want to talk about they can. Coming from this features such as event pages, group pages etc. should come into action to make it a more complete application. In the middle is the more factual feature which is the pollution reader of a certain place, it will show you the level of pollution of the area/route and will inform you of any risks accordingly. Finally on the right is the map where you would plot your route or simply look at the map and see what is going on in the local area - Search for events or sales at shops as well as finding out what nature is around at that time of day in the nature reserve.

Overall this application is based around the idea of dodging as much traffic, congestion and pollution as possible while directing individuals to the places of interest such as the Nature Reserve, Future Farms and The Observatory (read more on The Observatory in my other blog) and also being used as a navigation application to get to where you want to go - But this does not focus on speed or time it focuses on health and the experience you have of travelling through a place.
