“Our appreciation for making and design expand beyond the borders of
architecture.”
121collective is a design and build company striving to bring people together through architecture. Focusing on more than just aesthetically pleasing buildings, what they are doing is helping communities and the environment alike, using scupltures to attract residents of the local areas to come out and explore design, such as their project 'The Surbiton Yatai' which was made for The Seething Festival, it was a great success succeeding in getting all the community involved as well as showcasing work from students at Kingston School of Arts . As well as this they are known to love 'greening' the towns and cities we live in. Wild meadow pots accompanied by beautiful 90% up-cycled material benches were created to bring some much needed life into the area of New Malden, while also sharing vital awareness of the importance of Bee's and the GoCycle route which connects New Malden to Raynes Park which was created by the council to attract the idea of cycling instead of travelling by transport which emits carbon emissions and causes congestion.
"There is no power for change greater than a community discovering
what it cares about."
Communities care and have a voice. It can be said that throughout times as humans we are stronger in numbers and we are happier when we are living as one. However this is hard to accomplish in these voletile times and I believe that our modern way of living has divided us making us forget about the community and what it should mean to us. Coming from this the priorities of caring for one another and our environment, even where we live has gradually slipped away. There is hope, this project, 'Welcome to Tolworth' where we are working with 121collective to expand the good they are doing is revolving around developing the navigation (wayfinding) of the town towards the hidden gems that have been forgotten, which in turn will help the community explore their local area and come together in times of eusterirty and hardship within our society.
